i think it makes perfect sense for her to get so much better in a short amount of time, think back to when you were learning to drive, or when you picked up a new game, maybe you sucked at first, but it probably only took you like 10-20 hours to go from being bad to being mediocre or even good. the same applies to pretty much everything, and seeing as how they probably stayed there for at least a week they had plenty of time for katara to learn to bend at an intermediate level.

Katara was a prodigy, same as Aang and Toph. I feel like what accelerated her training was that she took concepts, lessons, and inspiration from other bending styles. She has a lot of Air bender flow in her movements, the ice disks was an earth bending move. When she encased herself and Azula in ice, she used a fire bender hot breath technique to free herself so she could chain down Azula. As I’m typing this, I’m realizing the whole gang has a lot of cross pollination in their bending.

Well the timeline ranges from the season of Fall to summer. They really only knew each other for about a year in the show. It’s hard to track down the timeline because weather and location is sporadic in this show. But Fall to the end of summer seems to be enough of a gap of time for all the events. Their time at the North Pole probably was about 2 weeks worth. However long it was, it was no longer than a month, it was very brief.

one of the biggest issues with storytelling , if there's no mention of timescale , the default assumption is that events unfold within a few short weeks, when in reality it was over months/years. just travelling to each place would take weeks even with a flying bison.
